The United States (US) and its allies have vowed to hold Russia accountable for its actions since its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.US Secretary of State Uzra Zeya told a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday about strengthening accountability and justice for serious violations of international law that in almost 100 days the world has seen Russian troops bombing maternity hospitals, train stations, apartments and even homes and killing civilians cycling on the road.
Zeya said the United States is working with its partners to support a comprehensive international investigation into the atrocities in Ukraine. Ireland’s attorney general Paul Gallagher welcomed efforts over the past three months to support justice applications in Ukraine, saying Ireland was one of 41 countries that had quickly appealed the case to the International Criminal Court.
Gallagher said the ICC had sent a team of 42 investigators, intelligence experts and support staff to investigate Russian crime and support Ukrainian efforts. Russia’s UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia has accused Western countries of being hypocritical in seeking international criminal justice for what Moscow calls its special military campaign in Ukraine.
