Indian tennis stalwart Rohan Bopanna etched his name in the annals of tennis history by securing victory alongside partner Matthew Ebden in the Miami Open. The duo’s triumph over Croatia’s Ivan Dodic and American Austin Krajicek not only clinched the title but also made Bopanna, at 44, the oldest man to claim an ATP Masters 1000 title.
Bopanna’s remarkable feat follows his previous record-breaking victory at the Indian Wells title last year. With this win, he also joins the esteemed ranks of Leander Paes as the second Indian to reach the finals of all nine ATP Masters 1000 events.
Despite a shaky start in the Miami Open final, losing the first set, Bopanna and Ebden displayed unwavering determination to stage a comeback. They clinched victory with a 6-3 win in the second set and a dominant 10-6 finish in the decisive third set.
In the semi-final showdown, Bopanna and Ebden showcased their prowess by defeating Spain’s Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory.
This recent triumph adds to Bopanna’s illustrious career, which includes a previous Grand Slam victory in mixed doubles at the 2017 French Open with Gabriela Dabrowski. Earlier this year, he secured his second Grand Slam title, this time in men’s doubles at the Australian Open, cementing his status as one of India’s tennis legends.
Bopanna’s remarkable journey in the sport exemplifies perseverance, skill, and a never-ending passion for tennis. As he continues to make waves on the ATP circuit, his achievements inspire generations of tennis enthusiasts across the globe.
