Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi Gears Up for Winter Session

December 2, 2023, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi is set to convene a crucial meeting today with floor leaders of political parties in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The primary objective of the meeting is to strategize the legislative agenda and ensure the smooth functioning of parliamentary proceedings during the Winter Session. The Winter Session is scheduled to have 15 sittings until December 22, and the meeting aims to foster collaboration among political leaders for effective governance.

Senior leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, are expected to attend the meeting. The gathering will address the 37 bills currently pending in Parliament, with 12 listed for consideration and passing and seven scheduled for introduction, consideration, and passing. Notably, among these bills are three crucial pieces of legislation aimed at replacing colonial-era criminal laws—the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Evidence Act.

Additionally, a key bill related to the appointment of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners will be discussed. The bill aims to align the status of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) with that of the cabinet secretary, elevating their status to that of a Supreme Court judge.

The Winter Session is expected to witness the tabling of the Ethics Committee’s report on the “cash-for-query” allegations against Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on the first day. The report recommends serious consequences for Moitra, including potential expulsion from the Seventeenth Lok Sabha. The adoption of the report by the House will determine the course of action in response to the alleged misconduct.

As the Winter Session commences, the meeting led by Pralhad Joshi aims to foster collaboration, streamline legislative priorities, and ensure a productive parliamentary session that addresses the pressing issues facing the nation.
