Cricket World Cup Defeat Allegedly Linked to Two Suicides in West Bengal and Odisha

In a tragic turn of events, two individuals reportedly died by suicide in West Bengal’s Bankura and Odisha’s Jajpur following India’s defeat to Australia in the Cricket World Cup final. The incidents highlight the emotional impact of sports outcomes on individuals.

Rahul Lohar, a 23-year-old resident of Bankura, took the extreme step near a cinema hall around 11 pm on Sunday, heartbroken by India’s six-wicket loss to Australia in Ahmedabad. According to Lohar’s brother-in-law Uttam Sur, he hanged himself in his room. The body was subsequently sent to the Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the incident.

In a parallel incident in Odisha’s Jajpur, another 23-year-old, Dev Ranjan Das, was found hanging from the terrace of his house shortly after the cricket match on Sunday night. Das had reportedly been undergoing treatment for “emotional disorder syndrome,” as informed by his uncle to the police. Distraught by India’s defeat in the final, Das left home in despair. The authorities in Jajpur have registered a case of unnatural death, and an autopsy report is awaited.

The tragic occurrences underscore the need for mental health awareness and support, especially during high-stakes sporting events that evoke strong emotions among fans. Sports organizations and mental health professionals often emphasize the importance of coping mechanisms and seeking assistance when dealing with disappointment or distress related to sports outcomes.
