Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurates Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, India’s Longest Sea Bridge

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the longest sea bridge in India. The 21.8-kilometre-long bridge, named the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, has been constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 17,840 crore.

Connecting South Mumbai to Navi Mumbai between Sewri and Nhava Sheva, the MTHL is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time from the current two-hour journey to a mere 15-20 minutes.

During his visit to Maharashtra, Prime Minister Modi unveiled projects totaling over Rs 30,500 crore in the state. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for an underground road tunnel connecting Eastern Freeway’s Orange Gate and launched the Namo Mahila Shashaktikaran Abhiyaan. These initiatives align with the Prime Minister’s vision to enhance urban transport infrastructure and connectivity, improving the ‘ease of mobility’ for citizens.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, now officially named ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri – Nhava Sheva Atal Setu,’ has been developed in line with this vision. The foundation stone for the bridge was initially laid by PM Modi in December 2016.

Key Features of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link:

•Cost: The Atal Setu has been constructed at a total cost exceeding Rs 17,840 crore.

•Length: Spanning approximately 21.8 km, the bridge features a six-lane structure with approximately 16.5 km over the sea and about 5.5 km on land.

•Connectivity: The bridge aims to enhance connectivity to both Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport, reducing travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa, and South India. It will also improve connectivity between Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

•Speed Limits: Mumbai Police has set the maximum speed limit for four-wheelers on the MTHL at 100 kilometers per hour. Motorbikes, autorickshaws, and tractors are prohibited on the sea bridge. Cars, taxis, light motor vehicles, minibuses, and two-axle buses have a speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour, with a restricted speed of 40 kilometers per hour on the ascent and descent of the bridge.

•Toll Charges: A passenger car will be charged Rs 250 for a one-way toll on the MTHL. Charges for return journeys and for daily and frequent travelers will vary.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting transportation efficiency and connectivity in the bustling metropolitan region.
