British automotive production fell 11% in April due to ongoing chip shortages and supply problems, exacerbated by the Ukraine crisis, a UK trade agency said on Thursday.Rising electricity prices and declining global markets have intensified pressure on the automotive industry, while the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a major automotive industry, has left many car manufacturers in a quandary looking for alternatives. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said 60,554 vehicles came out of the factory gates last month, compared to 68,306 last year. Electric vehicles make up more than a quarter of those vehicles, which has increased by about 2% year on year.
“The UK automotive industry is facing a host of problems that undermine productivity and competition,” said SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes, who called for similar government assistance to energy-intensive industries to cope with rising electricity costs.Six of the 10 vehicles exported in April headed for the European Union, an increase of 5% year-on-year. Production for the UK has grown for the second month in a row, exceeding 60 per cent from last year, when the epidemic was urgently needed.
