PM Modi’s warning on rising temperatures as fires break out across India

On Wednesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a stern warning about rising temperatures and the number of fires in dumping grounds, dumping sites and forests, saying ‘temperatures are rising rapidly in the country.  we are seeing an increase in fire incidents in various places’. Speaking to senior ministers – at a conference to review the status of Covid in India – Modi also called on countries to prioritize fire safety audits in hospitals, industries and other public buildings.

Temperatures rise sharply and sooner than usual. At the same time, we are seeing an increase in fire incidents in various places – forests, important buildings and hospitals – in recent days, “he said.

The warning came hours after a large fire broke out at a public hospital in the capital, Tamil Nadu, Chennai; no injuries were reported and 33 patients were evacuated. There was also a fire at a chemical factory in Uttar Pradesh.

It came again as Delhi swelled in another wave of heat, with temperatures expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

Fires in a landfill – which engulfed the rubbish of Ghazipur east of Delhi and another yesterday at a Balswa dump north in north – also contributed to the poisoning of people in the world’s most polluted capital. While Modi was speaking, the debris from the Balswa fire forced a nearby school – many of the parents of its students working as garbage collectors in the area – to close. “We can’t make them stay here, it will never be healthy for them,” the teacher told ANI.

In addition to wildfires, wildfires have spread to forested areas in the northern part of the country and around Mumbai. As of April 1, more than 500 forest fires in Himachal Pradesh have damaged 3,575 hectares and damaged R92 lakh. Earlier this week another fire was reported in a shack in Haryana’s Manesar, where one person was killed.

The India Meteorological Department predicts heat waves in the east, central and northwest – including Delhi – over the next five days and the risks reported in the lives of infants, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.
