The Narendra Modi government has carried out a mini-cabinet reshuffle, moving Kiren Rijija from the Law Ministry and replacing him with Arjun Ram Meghwal. Rijiju, one of the senior cabinet ministers overseeing a key ministry, was given the modest ministry of earth sciences.
Meghwal, a former IAS officer, has been posted as Independent Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in addition to his existing portfolios, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement.
Meghwal will continue to be in charge of Parliamentary Affairs and Culture as Minister of State. After the mini-rejig, Rijiju changed his Twitter bio to the newly named portfolio.
Rijiju recently found himself in the crosshairs with the judiciary over his controversial remarks over the past year. He questioned the collegial system of appointing judges and the division of powers between the executive and the judiciary.
On various public platforms, Rijiju called the collegium system “opaque”, “alien to the Constitution” and “the only system in the world where judges appoint people known to them”.
