Lyricist Javed Akhtar has been asked to appear before a court in Mumbai regarding a counter-complaint filed against him by Kangana Ranaut for alleged “blackmail and intimidation”. Now report has revealed that the court, while summoning him on August 5, said that there was indeed sufficient cause to file a case against him for the crime of intimidation and making gestures or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
In 2020, Javed filed a complaint against Kangana when she accused him in an interview of threatening her after he called her to his house with Roshan Hrithugamid. Kangana then filed a counter-complaint against Javed Akhtar.
What the court said
Metropolitan Magistrate (Andheri Court) RM Shaikh on July 24 issued summons against Javed Akhtar and asked him to appear in court on August 5. While issuing the summons, the court said there was no case of extortion against the lyricist. Asking a person to apologize in writing will not fall under the definition of “valuable security” as defined in Section 30 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) as it does not create, extend, transfer, limit, extinguish or waive any statutory right.
“As regards other offenses against the accused, based on the statements in the complaint, the verification of the complainant and the statement of her (Kangana’s) sister Rangoli Chandel,” the court said. “I have come to the conclusion that there are sufficient grounds to proceed against the accused for the offense under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (gestures or acts tending to outrage the modesty of a woman) of the IPC,” the court added.

In his complaint in 2020, Javed alleged that Kangana brought up his name during an interview when he referred to the “coterie” existing in Bollywood following the alleged suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
Kangana further filed a counter-complaint in the same court against Javed for alleged “blackmail and criminal intimidation”. In her complaint, she said that after her public spat with her Krrish 3 co-star, the texter called her and her sister Rangoli to their home with “malafide intentions and ulterior motives and then criminally intimidated and threatened her”.
