People must be at the heart of any infrastructure growth: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lamented the strong infrastructure through the use of modern technology and knowledge, saying that this will not only help prevent disaster for the present generation but also for future generations.

“It is a shared dream and vision that we can and should translate into reality,” he said in a video presentation at the launch of the fourth edition of the International Conference on Disaster Response Infrastructure.

In order to make the future more resilient, work must be undertaken in a “solid infrastructure transformation”. Strong infrastructure could be the center of broader adaptation efforts, he said.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure is not only about creating capital assets and making long-term returns on investment, it is not about numbers or money but about people, he said, adding that the effort should be about providing them with quality, reliable and equitable services.

He said people should be at the heart of any issue of infrastructure growth, and said this was what India was trying to do.The Prime Minister mentioned India’s efforts to expand basic facilities such as education, health, drinking water, sanitation, electricity and transport while addressing climate change in a more direct manner.

“That is why, at COP-26 we have committed ourselves to achieving ‘Net Zero’ by 2070, in line with our development efforts,” the prime minister said.”The firm promise of the Sustainable Development Goals is not to leave anyone behind. That is why, we are committed to meeting the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable, by building next-generation infrastructure to fulfill their aspirations,” he added.

Commending the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, he said in the short span of two and a half years, CDRI has taken significant steps and made significant contributions.

Modi said the “Strong Island Infrastructure” program launched at COP26 last year is a clear indication of our commitment to working with small island nations. The meeting was also attended by Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Madagascar President AndryNirinaRajoelina among others, the statement said.
