In a series of tweets, he said that the Dwarka Expressway will reduce pressure on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (part of the Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Bombay arm of the Golden Quadrilateral) and major roads that experience severe traffic congestion, mainly from commuters from West Delhi. . He said that 50% to 60% of the traffic on NH-8 will be diverted to the new expressway, improving movement towards Sohna Road, Golf Course Road and Air Extension. Once commissioned in 2023, it will help immensely in reducing air pollution in Delhi-NCR as well, he added. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari said that the Dwarka Expressway, also known as the Northern Peripheral Road in Haryana, is being developed as the first urban elevated expressway in India.
Shri Gadkari said that the Government under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is actively prioritizing the development of world-class infrastructure in every corner of the country and paving the way for “prosperity through connectivity”. The minister said that it is a 16-lane approach – controlled expressway with provision of minimum 3-lane service road on both sides, An expressway connecting Dwarka in Delhi with Gurugram in Haryana is being developed at a total cost of Rs 9,000 crore with a total length of 29 km, from of which 19 km is in Haryana while remaining 10 km of length is in Delhi.
Shri Gadkari said that the Dwarka Expressway will have 4 multi-level interchanges (Tunnel/Underpasses, At-grade road, Elevated flyover and flyover over flyover) at major junctions including construction of the longest (3.6 km) and widest (8 lane) urban road tunnel in India. The highway starts from Shiv-Murti on NH-8 (Delhi-Gurugram highway) and ends near KherkiDaula Toll Plaza via Dwarka Sector 21, Gurugram and Basai border, he added.
The minister said that the development of this prestigious project plays a key role in the plan to decongest the capital city of Delhi. Once completed, the Dwarka Expressway will provide direct access to the upcoming India International Convention Center (IICC) in Dwarka’s Sector 25 and also provide an alternative connection to the IGI Airport through a shallow tunnel. He said that state-of-the-art Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) like Advanced Traffic Management System, Toll Management System, CCTV cameras, Surveillance etc. will be an integral part of this upcoming world class corridor.
Shri Gadkari said that Dwarka Expressway will have a massive tree transplant with 12,000 transplanted trees. He said the project is also an engineering ace that includes a 34-meter wide 8-lane expressway, the first of its kind to be built on a single pier. The project is estimated to use 2 lakh MT of steel (30 times the steel used in the Eiffel Tower) and 20 lakh cum concrete (6 times the concrete used in the Burj Khalifa) for its construction.
