India has taken many steps towards low-carbon development, hydrogen and biofuels

Speaking at a round table on ‘Opportunities in India-US Strategic Partnership’ in Houston, Texas, Union Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri. Hardeep S. Puri noted that 25% of the growth in global energy demand over the next 2 decades will come from India. He noted that India’s energy strategy is mindful of commitments to the global community, green transition and ensuring energy availability, affordability and security for all.

India has taken many steps towards low-carbon development, including through emerging fuels such as hydrogen and biofuels. He emphasized that despite the current challenging energy environment, India’s commitment to energy transitions and its climate mitigation goals will not diminish. Shri Hardeep S. Puri chaired a round table on “Opportunities in India-US Strategic Partnership” organized by the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. The round table brought together over 60 participants from 35 companies, including the leadership of major energy companies such as Exxonmobil, Chevron, Chieniere, Lanzatech, Honeywell, BakerHughes, Emerson, Tellurian to name a few. Indian power PSUs also participated in the event.

The Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas said that India is undertaking major reforms to rationalize and boost exploration and production by curtailing prohibited areas by 99% and opening approx. 1 million square km, making quality geological data available through a national depository registry, etc. As a gesture of GOI’s commitment to the E&P sector, the Special Round and Offshore Bidding Round for Coal Beds (CBM) in the oil and gas capital of the world (Houston) offering more than 2.3 lakh sq km after opening more than 1 was recently launched by the Minister million square km of No Go areas.

In a series of tweets, Shri Hardeep Puri said that the huge potential between the two countries in the areas of biofuels, gas economy, green hydrogen, petrochemicals and supply sectors is evident and is supported by the cooperation of our private sector companies. He further stated, “Due to the reform measures of Modi Govt, there is unprecedented interest in Indian E&P from global oil companies.” The discussion concluded with broad support from the participants to pursue potential partnerships that will bring best-in-class technologies in both traditional and new energies to India.
