Britain still wants to agree a Diwali free trade deal with India

Britain still wants to agree a Diwali free trade deal with India later this month, a spokesman for Prime Minister Liz Truss said on Wednesday. Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who met Indian leader Narendra Modi in April, set an ambitious goal of signing a free trade deal by Diwali, India’s festival of lights at the end of October.

Asked if the government still wanted a trade deal by that date, the spokesman said: “Yes, we are working towards this highly ambitious free trade agreement that would put the UK at the forefront of supplying India’s growing middle class.”
