Professional photographer and polar guide Piet van den Bemd was flying the drone when he observed an emerging pattern resembling a Fibonacci spiral, created by the whales’ bubble-net feeding.
For over three decades, researchers have recognized bubble-net feeding as a tool employed by humpback whales. This cooperative hunting strategy involves one whale leading the creation of a spiraling wall of bubbles, while others swim around and herd fish or krill into the confined space.
