Huma Qureshi said it’s a woman’s choice how she wants to be and I remember my friends being shamed for being thin

Actress Huma Qureshi once spoke about how having perfect hair and waistline is not important to her. Citing examples of her friends who were teased for being thin, she said it’s a woman’s choice to be whatever she wants to be. She also claimed that she never wanted to be that girl.

Huma Qureshi turns a year older on Friday. The actor has always been vocal about body positivity. In fact, she also starred in the movie Double XL with Sonakshi Sinha, which revolved around breaking stereotypes that beauty equals size.

Huma Qureshi on beauty standards

In an interview with Cosmopolitan magazine in 2019, Huma said: “We should focus on developing personality and individuality, which is more important than having poker straight hair or a size 24 waist. I have so many friends who are ashamed of being thin. Why can’t we just leave women and their bodies alone? I mean, there are some states in America right now where women don’t have rights over their bodies. They cannot get a legal abortion. How sad is that? Who gets to decide what we do with our bodies? Why should this be everyone’s problem? Isn’t it a woman’s personal choice?

“I never chased the stars. I never really wanted to be that girl. It is not me. I always want to be seen as an artist who can walk the red carpet, go to Cannes every year and do all the fashion. I love my fashion (laughs). I want to be an actor who straddles all these worlds and proudly,” she also said.

Huma was recently seen in Tarla, a biopic on Indian chef and cookbook author Tarla Dalal. The movie is directed by Piyush Gupta while Ronnie Screwvala, Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari are behind it. It was released on ZEE5 and received warm reviews from critics. Huma will next be seen in Pooja Meri Jaan.
