Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Three High Court Chief Justices as Top Court Judges

In a significant move, the Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, has recommended the appointment of three high court chief justices as Supreme Court judges. The names put forward for this elevation are Delhi High Court Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Rajasthan High Court Chief Justice Augustine George Masih, and Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta.
These recommendations, if approved by the Centre, will fill the existing vacancies and bring the Supreme Court to its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. Currently, the apex court is functioning with 31 judges, and the workload has been steadily increasing due to a massive backlog of cases.
The collegium, in its resolution, acknowledged the ever-mounting pendency of cases and the consequent increase in the workload of judges. To address this issue, the collegium has decided to ensure that the Supreme Court operates with a full complement of judges at all times. The selection process involved a careful and thorough consideration of the chief justices and senior puisne judges of various high courts who were eligible for elevation to the Supreme Court.
The collegium circulated judgments authored by the candidates being considered for elevation to the Supreme Court, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of their judicial acumen and capabilities.
The need for a full bench in the Supreme Court is imperative to address the growing number of cases and ensure timely and efficient dispensation of justice. The Supreme Court plays a pivotal role in interpreting and upholding the rule of law in India, and having a complete bench of judges is crucial for the effective functioning of the judicial system.
In addition to the appointment of new judges, the Centre for Research and Planning of the Supreme Court has prepared a compilation of relevant background material to assist in the selection process. The move to recommend these appointments reflects a concerted effort to strengthen the judiciary and streamline the legal process, ensuring that justice is delivered without undue delays.
As the recommendations move forward, they hold the promise of fortifying the Supreme Court’s capacity to tackle the mounting caseload and uphold the principles of justice that are integral to India’s legal system.
