UNGA President Commends India-UN Cooperation for Global South at Special Event

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, expressed his delight at meeting India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, during a special event highlighting the success of India-UN cooperation with the Global South. The event, titled “India-UN for Global South: Delivering for Development,” took place during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In a social media post, UNGA President Dennis Francis shared a glimpse of his meetings, saying, “Glad to join Minister @DrSJaishankar & @IndiaunNewyork at a special event to showcase the success story of India-UN cooperation with the Global South. India, home to one-sixth of humanity, plays an unparalleled role in our global mission for a better, more sustainable world.”

During the event, President Francis highlighted the significance of India’s recent G20 presidency, noting that it marked a historic milestone by ushering the African Union into the group as a permanent member, symbolizing solidarity and cooperation across the Global South.

Francis emphasized India’s unique role in the global mission for a better and more sustainable world, describing it as an “unparalleled” contributor. He praised India’s legacy of contributions, including its commitment to democracy, support for women-led development, and early adoption of the UN’s global goals.

The UNGA President also expressed his honor in following in the footsteps of Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit, the first-ever female President of the General Assembly, whom India entrusted to the United Nations.

Highlighting the inspiration provided by the partnership between India and the UN to the Global South, President Francis stated that the event echoed the message of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means “The world is one family.”

He stressed the need for reform within multilateral organizations like the United Nations to fully recognize and leverage the significance of the Global South.

Moreover, President Francis praised India’s efforts in strengthening digital public infrastructure and innovative capacity-building.

The event underscored the vital role India plays in fostering collaboration between nations and promoting sustainable development on a global scale.
