Global Peace Index 2022: how India has performed in this and how the Indian economy has badly affected by not getting good rank in the Global Peace Index

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is a report produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) that measures the relative level of international and regional peace. The GPI estimates the 163 regions and territories (collectively accounting for 99.7 percent of the world’s population) in terms of their levels of peace. Over the past decade, the GPI has introduced trends to increased global violence and less peace.

India has moved up three places to rank 135 out of 163 countries in the 2022 Global Peace Index, according to a report by the international think tank Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP). The index has placed India at a “low” level in terms of peace. Countries are judged on the basis of 23 borders, including domestic and international conflicts, public safety and security, and the level of military recovery. According to the report, India has seen a 1.4 percent improvement in total peace over the past year, driven by the development of a “continuous conflict” platform. However, the country has seen an increase in violent crime and ideas of crime indicators.Poor economy, increased political instability following the Covid-19 epidemic, and ongoing civil unrest were some of the factors cited in India’s post-peace protocol. held since 2008. Iceland is followed by New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark and Austria. Seven of the top 10 countries in the GPI are Europe. Turkey is the only country in the region that will be listed without the upper part of the index.

The US, ranked 129th, has recorded its lowest level of peace since 2008, with a report that “civil unrest” continues as a “major driver of the collapse”. The UK has moved up two places to 34th place. For the fifth year in a row, Afghanistan is a relatively peaceful country, followed by Yemen, Syria, Russia and South Sudan. Among South Asian countries, Bhutan is at the top of the 19th-century peace index. Bhutan is followed by Nepal (73), Sri Lanka (90) and Bangladesh (96). Pakistan is ranked 147th in the list. Two of the five countries that saw a major breakdown in peace were Russia and Ukraine. The report found that world peace had plummeted to the lowest level in 15 years amid uncertainty over the post-Covid-19 economic stability and the Russian war in Ukraine. especially in southern Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The average world peace rate dropped by 0.3 percent by 2021, the report said. The level of political terrorism, the strained relations between the two countries, refugees and migrants have deteriorated since the program was launched in 2008.

The impact of economic violence includes the direct and indirect costs of violence and the economic repetition used for direct costs. The economic costs of violence include only direct and indirect costs. Individuals and percentage of GDP results are calculated using the economic costs of violence, ”the report said.Syria, South Sudan and the Central African Republic have been the worst affected countries with significant economic impact. Iceland, Kosovo and Switzerland are the only two percent affected by economic expenditure as a percentage of GDP.The median economic impact of the ten worst-affected countries was 34% of global GDP.

“The economic value of lost peace reached record levels by 2022. There is a need to reverse this trend, and the GPI has shown that those countries that use the attitudes, institutions and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies, see improved economic outcomes,” said Steve Killelea, founder. and Chair of the IEP.The number of countries facing violent internal conflicts has risen from 29 to 38, but the number of people killed in internal conflicts has dropped since 2017.

South Asia remained the second most peaceful region but recorded the largest increase in peace, largely due to the development of ongoing conflicts. It has been the eleventh decline in peace in the last fifteen years. Although the situation in 90 countries has improved, which is happening at a slower pace, it has also changed rapidly in 71 countries, explains the IEP. Political fears and insecurities, relations with neighboring countries, and the refugee situation have reached their worst level since the establishment of the GPI, the report also revealed. There have been major developments in a number of indicators, including the impact of terrorism, nuclear and heavy weapons, deaths due to civil strife, military costs, prison rates, and criminal ideas. The impact of terrorism has been very low since the establishment of the GPI.

“Last year we warned of a recession due to COVID-19. We now face the shortage of supply chain, rising inflation, and food insecurity that has been compounded by tragic events in Ukraine. The political and economic consequences of this will be back in the years to come, ”explained Steve Killelea of Australia, founder and executive chairman of the IEP.”Combined with a record of adverse effects on neighborly relations, political instability, and the intensity of internal conflicts, governments, organizations, and leaders must exercise the power of peace,” he added.”The economic value of lost peace reached record levels by 2022. There is a need to reverse this trend, and the GPI has shown that those countries use the attitudes, institutions, and structures that create and sustain peaceful societies, affirming economic development.
