Ghulam Nabi Azad addressed a gathering in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, addressing the historical context of religion in India. Democratic Progressive Party Azad (DPAP) chief Ghulam Nabi Azad has sparked controversy by saying that most Indian Muslims have converted from Hinduism.
The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir was addressing a rally in Doda district, where he made an observation about the historical context of religion in India.
Ghulam Nabi Azad says “Some BJP leader said that some (Muslims) came from outside and some did not. Nobody came from outside or from inside. Islam came into being only 1500 years ago. Hindu religion is very old. About 10-20 of them (Muslims) must have come from outside, some there they were in the Mughal army”.
Ghulam Nabi Azad says “All other Muslims converted from Hinduism in India. An example of this can be found in Kashmir. Who were the Muslims in Kashmir 600 years ago? They were all Kashmiri Pandits. They converted to Islam. They were all born into this religion”.

Azad named the various communities and said that all of them have made India their home. It’s our home, we didn’t come from outside. We were born on this soil and we will perish on it . Azad said that when Hindus die, they are cremated. They are burned in different places. Their ashes are placed in a river that mixes the water and we drink that water.
Now the flesh and bones of Muslims become part of the soil of the nation. They too become part of this land. Their flesh becomes part of the soil of Bharat Mata. Both Hindus and Muslims merge in this land. What is the difference between them?
Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister Kavinder Gupta agreed with Azad’s views, saying that people were practicing Hinduism before “invaders” brought in other religions. The timeline given by Azad about the emergence of Islam in India is true.
Gupta further said that unraveling the history of Kashmir would also reveal that about 600 years ago there was no Muslim in Kashmir and everyone there was Hindu.
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Mehbooba Mufti saying, “I don’t know how far back (in time) he went and what knowledge he has about his ancestors. I would advise him to go back far and perhaps find some monkeys among his ancestors”.
