Antony Blinken Warns Against Gaza Territory Reduction, Rejects Israeli Reoccupation Plans

In a firm stance against potential Israeli actions, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has warned against any reduction in the size of Gaza territory, reaffirming Washington’s opposition to the reoccupation of the region. Blinken’s remarks come in response to a post-war plan proposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which includes granting the Israeli army “indefinite freedom” to operate in Gaza following Hamas’ defeat.

“Gaza cannot serve as a platform for terrorism. There should be no Israeli reoccupation of Gaza. The size of Gaza territory should remain unchanged,” Blinken asserted during his visit to Buenos Aires after attending a G20 meeting of foreign ministers in Brazil.

While expressing support for Israel’s right to self-defense, Blinken condemned a recent attack near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank, which left one dead and eight wounded. However, he cautioned against disproportionate responses, emphasizing the need for restraint and adherence to international law.

Palestinians have voiced grievances over heightened Israeli-imposed restrictions in the West Bank since the onset of the conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s call for a “firm security response” and increased settlement construction in areas like Maale Adumim has further exacerbated tensions.

Blinken condemned such actions, stating that “new settlements are counterproductive to achieving enduring peace and are inconsistent with international law.” He reiterated the Biden administration’s staunch opposition to settlement expansion, emphasizing its detrimental impact on Israel’s security and the prospects for peace in the region.

As diplomatic efforts continue to navigate the complex dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Blinken’s unequivocal message underscores the importance of preserving the territorial integrity of Gaza and pursuing avenues for peaceful resolution without compromising the rights and aspirations of both Israelis and Palestinians.
