FSSAI has issued notices to several restaurants for not listing the calorie count of food items on menus

The country’s top food regulator, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), has issued notices to several restaurants for not listing the calorie count of food items on menus as required by its latest labeling regulations, people familiar with the matter said. he said. The last date to meet the standards was January 1, 2022, which was later extended to July 1, 2022.

“It’s a matter of compliance; several of them have yet to make the required changes,” a senior government official aware of the matter said on condition of anonymity, declining to divulge further details on the nature of the announcement. According to the rules, the food regulator even has the power to cancel the license of an establishment for non-compliance.

In November 2020, the food regulator announced new food packaging and labeling regulations that would require all centrally licensed restaurants or those with a chain of 10 or more restaurants to list the number of calories per portion size of a meal. item on the menu, boards and brochures so customers can clearly see them.

Restaurants would also be required to provide allergen information individually in terms of ingredients used in items, nutritional information and veg/non-veg logo. Business operators on e-commerce platforms also need to get this information from their restaurant partners to list on their portal. The changes have been made for customers to make an informed decision,” the official quoted above added.

FSSAI is an autonomous body under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare which is mandated to set standards related to food safety in the country. The regulator regularly updates the regulations and the packaging and labeling regulations are the latest standards in the list, which have been adapted to meet current industry requirements.
