Elon Musk can charge businesses $1,000 a month to maintain Twitter’s gold badge

According to a report posted on Twitter by social media consultant Matt Navarra, businesses may now have to earn more than $1,000 per month to maintain their Twitter gold verification badge. Navarra shared screenshots of Twitter’s offer of $1,000 to verify organizations and an additional $50 per month for affiliate accounts.

The news was confirmed by tech news website The Information, which added that details are still being finalized and the pricing structure is subject to change.

According to screenshots of an email purportedly sent by Twitter employees, the new proposal is called Verified for Organizations. Twitter first announced it on January 14th, saying that the verification plan, formerly known as Blue for Business, would launch soon. He also added that there is an opportunity to gain early access to it through a waiting list process.

The latest revenue generation plan will also include “Tweet Boosting,” which purportedly increases the reach of tweets sent out by organizations and their affiliates. New owner Elon Musk’s bid to boost subscription revenue with Twitter’s $8-a-month Blue service has backfired after it led to an avalanche of copycats on the microblogging site.

The gold ticks were introduced by Musk when the scheme was relaunched in December last year as a replacement for the blue ticks bought by individuals. Musk also announced that “legacy” pre-Twitter Blue verified accounts would be terminated in the coming months, calling them “corrupt and pointless”.

On Friday, a jury ruled that Musk did not mislead investors with his 2018 tweets about a Tesla buyout that never happened. On August 7, 2018, Musk tweeted that he had the funding to take Tesla private. The tweets sent Twitter shares soaring for 10 days before falling after Musk walked away from a deal in which he never had a firm financial commitment, based on evidence presented during the three-week trial.
