Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking achievement, a green propulsion system developed under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has demonstrated unparalleled functionality in orbit. This remarkable feat was achieved through a collaboration with Bengaluru-based start-up Bellatrix Aerospace Pvt Ltd, marking a significant milestone in India’s space technology advancement.
The project, known as the 1N Class Green Monopropellant thruster, was designed for altitude control and orbit maintenance of microsatellites. Implemented under the guidance of DRDO’s Project Monitoring & Mentoring Group, the initiative has showcased exceptional performance parameters, exceeding expectations at every level.
Utilizing telemetry data from the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bengaluru, the green propulsion system has validated its in-orbit functionality with remarkable accuracy. This innovative technology offers a non-toxic and eco-friendly solution for propulsion in low Earth orbit, revolutionizing the traditional approach to space propulsion.
Key components of the propulsion system, including the propellant, valves, catalyst bed, and drive electronics, have been indigenously developed, highlighting India’s self-reliance in space technology. With its ability to operate in both pulsed mode and steady state firing in vacuum, the system is ideally suited for space missions with high thrust requirements.
The success of this project underscores the efficacy of the TDF programme, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Defence aimed at fostering innovation in defence and aerospace sectors, particularly among start-ups and MSMEs. By funding cutting-edge research and development efforts, TDF continues to drive India’s pursuit of technological excellence and self-sufficiency, aligning closely with the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
The remarkable achievements of DRDO and its partners in advancing green propulsion technology reaffirm India’s growing prowess in space exploration and underline the nation’s commitment to sustainable and environmentally conscious practices in the aerospace industry.
