The casting of Ranveer Singh as the new Don did not go down well with many ardent fans of the franchise. Director Farhan Akhtar finally breaks his silence. Farhan Akhtar speaks on the mixed reactions that erupted after it was announced that Ranveer Singh had replaced Shah Rukh Khan for Don 3. In an interview with BBC Asian Network, the filmmaker revealed that Ranveer is “really excited and really nervous” to step in to a franchise previously led by Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan.

In an interview, Farhan responded to the criticism and added, “Ranveer is amazing. He’s great for the part. He’s also, as you can imagine, really excited about the thing and really nervous. You have big shoes to fill. But we went through the same emotional process when Shah Rukh did it, and everyone was like ‘Oh my God, how can you replace Mr. Bachchan?’ That’s when the whole thing happened.”
Farhan added that as a director, he’s also responsible for making the sequel work, It’s really about the actor coming in and owning the role and making it really likable, giving it his own style and flair, he will do a great job. I think the onus is now more on me to make sure the script and the film work the way I envision them.”
Announcement of Don 3
Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani-led production house, shared the first video of Ranveer in the titular character. “A new era begins. #Don3 @ranveersingh @faroutakhtar” read the caption. Reaction to the announcement was largely negative, with many calling it a travesty instead. Shah Rukh played Don in the 2006 film Don: The Chase Begins Again and its sequel Don 2: The King Is Back in 2011.
Recently, Ranveer took to Instagram and shared pictures from his childhood and write “Damn! I have dreamed of doing this for a very, very long time! I fell in love with movies as a child and like the rest of us, I watched and worshiped Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan – the two G.O.A.Ts of Hindi cinema.”
