DGCA Introduces Stringent Regulations for Powered Hang Gliders to Enhance Security Measures in the Wake of Recent Hamas Attack on Israel

In the wake of a harrowing and unprecedented terrorist attack perpetrated by Hamas militants, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s aviation regulatory authority, has swiftly introduced a series of stringent regulations concerning the operation and security of powered hang gliders. The move comes after Hamas terrorists infiltrated Israeli airspace using motorized hang gliders, resulting in a horrific and indiscriminate loss of life.
Under the new regulations, powered hang gliders can only be flown by individuals who have received explicit permission from an examiner or instructor approved by the DGCA. These examiners or instructors must meet specific criteria, including a minimum of 50 hours of flight time on powered hang gliders, along with 10 hours of dual machine experience. Once approved by the aviation regulator, these individuals can authorize others to operate motorized hang gliders.
The DGCA has also stipulated stringent eligibility criteria for pilots, mandating a Commercial Pilot License with 25 hours of flight time on powered hang gliders, or 50 hours of flight experience with prior authorization.
Furthermore, the rules now require a certificate issued by the DGCA for the sale or transfer of powered hang gliders, with background checks conducted by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Those intending to acquire or manufacture such aircraft must obtain security clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs, in compliance with their specified security requirements.
These measures, while born from the tragic and devastating events caused by Hamas, serve to enhance the safety and security of powered hang glider operations in India, ensuring that they are not misused for any unauthorized or illicit purposes.
