Delhi Police on Friday morning arrested a man for allegedly shielding men who were in a car that dragged a 20-year-old woman after it rammed her two-wheeler for at least two hours on January 1.
Special Commissioner of Police Sagar Preet Hooda said “Ashutosh has been arrested. He gave false information to the police, the involvement of Ashutosh and Ankush Khanna, who remained absconding, in protecting the accused was proved through CCTV footage and call records”.
Police said “there were four men in the gray Maruti Suzuki Baleno that rammed into Anjali Kumari’s scooter and dragged her to her death, not five as previously thought”.
Investigators have concluded that the fifth arrested suspect, Deepak, was not in the car when he hit the woman in Sultanpuri.
Additional Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal said “Deepak was at home at the time of the accident and was informed about the accident through a phone call. The car was driven by Amit Khanna. After spotting the body being dragged by the car, he called his cousins Ankush and Deepak, who asked him to tell the police that Deepak was driving the car. We suspect they have consulted lawyers”.
Hooda said the reason for this confusion was that Deepak had a driving license while Amit Khanna did not. Ashutosh is a friend of Amit Khanna. Ankush Khanna is the cousin of Deepak and Amit Khanna. Both were not in the car at the time of the accident but they helped the arrested accused by giving false statements to the police.
Kumari’s body became entangled in the lower part of the car, which then drove for at least two hours, dragging her body for at least 14 km. The body was released in a crushed state and found in Kanjhawala.
