DDMA is set to withdraw the ₹500 fine for not wearing masks in public places

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is set to withdraw the ₹500 fine for not wearing masks in public places in the capital. The unmasked fine was ₹2,000 in November and was later reduced to ₹500 in February. On 2 April, the Delhi government abolished the ₹500 fine for not wearing masks in public places as daily infections were relatively low.

However, the fine was reimposed within three weeks as the country’s capital witnessed an almost three-fold increase in new cases between April 11 and 18. In addition to removing the fine, the DDMA has also extended the contract for the provision of services to health workers hired at Covid hospitals until the end of the year.

In the last 24 hours, the city has recorded 74 fresh cases of Covid, with the positivity rate at 1.07 percent, according to data released by the city’s health department. No Covid-related deaths were reported on Tuesday. Currently, there are a total of 45 closed zones in Delhi.

Meanwhile, India reported a total of 1,968 new infections on Tuesday, up from more than 3,000 cases on Monday. In the week ending October 2, India witnessed more than 26,300 new infections. Tuesday’s daily Covid count is the lowest in 133 days. On May 23, a total of 1,675 cases were recorded within 24 hours. The latest drop is seen as a respite as thousands across the country take part in festivities after two years of muted celebrations due to the virus.
