Cyclonic storm ‘Midhili’ weakened into a deep depression over Tripura and adjoining Bangladesh on Saturday morning, prompting concerns of heavy rainfall in northeastern states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the system is moving towards north-northeast over South Assam and adjoining Mizoram and Tripura. As a precautionary measure, red alerts have been issued in four districts of Tripura, with Mizoram authorities urging residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
The IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in northeastern states, including Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam, with the weather conditions expected to persist. In Mizoram, the district administrations have issued notices, advising people to be prepared for any eventualities due to the rain. The Met office recorded substantial rainfall in Agartala, Tripura’s capital.
The cyclonic storm, named ‘Midhili’ by the Maldives, is expected to move past the Sunderbans before making landfall on the Bangladesh coast. The naming convention follows the system adopted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and member countries of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission (ESCAP) in rotation.
Residents in the affected regions are advised to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines issued by local authorities.
