Opposition members targeted the Congress government over alleged scams and failure to fulfill its poll promises

The Bhupesh Baghel led Congress government survived a no confidence motion by the Bharatiya Janata Party in Chhattisgarh on Saturday. The motion was reportedly defeated by voice vote shortly after 1 a.m. after 13 hours of debate. While the Congress has 71 members in the 90-member assembly, the BJP has 13 MLAs in the House.

All about heated debate

The House witnessed a heated debate on the no-confidence motion since Friday as opposition members targeted the Congress government over alleged scams, failure to fulfill its survey promises and the “deteriorating” law and order situation.

According to media reports, the Treasury rejected the accusations of the opposition parties because they did not come up with any specific problems and the indictment lacked facts.

Reacting to the debate, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel also claimed that the opposition’s allegations lacked facts and by making them, the BJP gave the government a chance to highlight its achievements in the Assembly.

BJP’s move against Congress

The debate began on Friday when the BJP tabled a 109-point “charge-sheet” against the Baghel government, accusing it of corruption and reneging on poll promises.

The BJP moved a no-confidence motion against the government on Wednesday and the debate on it was fixed for Friday.
