India Witnesses Surge in Power Generation, Coal Import Declines Amid Increasing Demand

India, the world’s third-largest consumer of coal energy, experienced a significant surge in power generation, with an 8.18% increase from April to October 2023 compared to the corresponding period the previous year. The country’s annual electricity demand has been growing at a rate of approximately 4.7%.

During the April to October 2023 period, coal-based power generation saw an 11.16% increase, reaching 686.7 Billion Units (BU) compared to 630.7 BU generated in the same period the previous year. This surge can be attributed to factors such as an unprecedented rise in temperature, delayed monsoons in the Northern region, and the resumption of full commercial activities post-Covid.

Despite the escalating power demand, there has been a substantial decrease of 46.57% in coal import for blending, amounting to 13.57 million metric tons (MT) up to October 2023, down from 25.4 MT in the corresponding period the previous year. This decline underscores India’s commitment to self-reliance in coal production and reducing overall coal imports.

The government’s persistent efforts to enhance coal production align with the goal of increasing availability and reducing dependence on imported coal. This strategic approach aims to safeguard foreign reserves and contribute to the nation’s energy security.
