CISF Takes Over Parliament Security in Wake of Breach Incident

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is set to assume control of Parliament security, replacing Delhi Police following last week’s security breach, the government announced. The decision, outlined in a notification by the Home Ministry, aims to streamline security protocols and avoid overlapping responsibilities among various agencies. The CISF, known for providing integrated security cover to sensitive public sector undertakings, will be responsible for access control, including frisking entrants.

Security measures within the Parliament building will remain under the purview of the Lok Sabha Secretariat, while the outer perimeter will continue to be safeguarded by the police. The move follows a detailed security sweep directed by the Home Ministry in response to the breach on December 13.

During the breach, two individuals gained unauthorized access to the Lok Sabha’s visitor gallery, deploying smoke canisters inside the chamber and triggering a security scare. The incident led to the arrest of four individuals, including the alleged mastermind, prompting heightened security measures and a political row. The opposition has demanded answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

In response to the breach, the government had already implemented tighter entry protocols, restricting access to the Parliament complex and designating separate entrances for MPs, staff members, and the press. Additionally, plans include enclosing the visitors’ gallery in glass to prevent unauthorized entry into the House chamber and installing body scan machines.

The security overhaul comes on the 22nd anniversary of the attack on the old Parliament building, underscoring the importance of reinforcing security measures to prevent potential threats. The transition to CISF control is part of a broader effort to enhance security and mitigate risks within one of the country’s most critical institutions.
