China’s first solar-powered power station to generate electricity came into full force on Monday in Wenling City in eastern Zhejiang Province in China. This project marks the world’s latest way of using dual green energy sources in a concerted way to generate electricity.
With an installed capacity of 100 megawatts, the power station ensures additional stability in the use of renewable energy. Since solar energy is only occasionally available and not available at sunset, ocean waves can take their place by providing energy at night. The moon’s gravitational pull causes the ocean waves.
“This project has created a new model for the full utilization of renewable energy by combining ocean power generation and photovoltaic using both solar and water [waves],” Feng Shuchen, vice president of China Energy Group, told China Media Group (CMG). “It has also successfully promoted innovation and development to accelerate structural transformation and industrial development.”
The power station is built on 133 hectares with 185,000 photovoltaic modules installed. Its annual production will be over 100 million kWh to meet the annual electricity demand of some 30,000 urban households.Compared to a thermal power station of the same size, the combined power station will save about 28,716 tons of ordinary coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 76,638 tons per year.
