Brazil’s Bolsonaro raises environmental fines to protect the Amazon rain forest

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro signed a declaration Tuesday on an increase in environmental crime fines, according to an official government magazine, in an effort to allow for stronger protection of the Amazon rain forest.

The law raises the potential for fines for fraudulent documentation to cover up illegal logging, clarifies the serious consequences for recurring environmental offenders and aims to reduce the backlog of penalties pending collection.
