Blinking – an involuntary action that occurs every few seconds, often without conscious thought. While we may not pay much attention to it, recent research suggests that blinking serves a more significant purpose beyond simply lubricating the eyes.
A study conducted by neuroscientist Bin Yang and colleagues from the University of Rochester delved into the effects of blinking on vision. Contrary to previous assumptions that blinking interrupts visual processing, the study reveals that it actually enhances vision by increasing the strength of visual input signals.
Using high-resolution eye-tracking technology, researchers observed 12 participants as they viewed images of varying contrast on a screen. The study found that blinks modulated the intensity of light falling on the retina, resulting in a visual boost when compared to periods of uninterrupted fixation on the screen.
Interestingly, this visual enhancement occurred not only during intentional blinks but also during reflexive ones. Even simulated blinks, which mimicked changes in luminosity, had a similar effect on vision, challenging the notion that blinks impair visual processing.
Furthermore, blinks were found to aid in reformatting visual information, akin to other subconscious eye movements like saccades and ocular drifts. These movements contribute spatial markers and timestamps to our visual perception, shaping our understanding of the visual world.
Given that we spend approximately 10 percent of our waking hours with our eyes closed due to blinking, these findings provide reassurance that this seemingly mundane action serves a crucial function in optimizing our vision.
