In response to findings of benzene contamination in benzoyl peroxide products such as Proactiv and Clearasil, dermatologists are advising individuals to store these products at refrigerated temperatures to minimize the risk of benzene exposure. The American Acne & Rosacea Society (AARS), with approximately 6,000 members, emphasized the importance of benzoyl peroxide in treating acne and other skin conditions while acknowledging the potential carcinogenic risks associated with benzene contamination.
The recommendation to refrigerate benzoyl peroxide creams, gels, and washes follows a petition filed by the testing lab Valisure with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Valisure discovered elevated levels of benzene in benzoyl peroxide acne treatments during stability testing, prompting concerns over product safety. Notably, products such as Proactiv’s 2.5% benzoyl peroxide cream and Clearasil’s 10% benzoyl peroxide cream were among those flagged for benzene contamination.
James Del Rosso, President of AARS, expressed surprise at the findings, given benzoyl peroxide’s long-standing use in dermatology for over five decades. However, he emphasized the need for further research to better understand the extent of the contamination and its potential health implications.
While the FDA is working to verify the accuracy of Valisure’s data, the recommendation to refrigerate benzoyl peroxide products serves as a precautionary measure to mitigate the risk of benzene exposure. Individuals are encouraged to prioritize safety and adhere to any additional guidance provided by regulatory authorities as more information becomes available.
