US Calls for Democratic Interim Government in Bangladesh Amidst Political Turmoil

Washington: Joe Biden Administration has emphasized that any interim government formed in Bangladesh should adhere to democratic principles, rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people. This statement comes in the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s sudden resignation amidst violent anti-quota protests, which have plunged the nation into chaos.

“We want to see the Bangladeshi people decide the future of the Bangladeshi government,” State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said during his daily news conference. The United States is closely monitoring the situation and calls for an end to violence.

Bangladesh experienced a dramatic shift as Prime Minister Hasina secretly resigned and fled the country in a military aircraft. The army announced the establishment of an interim government to fill the power vacuum. News of Hasina’s departure led to hundreds of protestors breaking into her residence, vandalizing and looting, further intensifying the anti-government protests that have resulted in over 300 deaths in the past fortnight. Hasina later arrived at Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad, India, en route to London.

Miller reiterated the need for accountability and justice for the recent violence, stating, “All decisions regarding the interim government should be made with respect to democratic principles, rule of law, and the will of the Bangladeshi people.” He emphasized that those responsible for the violence must be held accountable under Bangladeshi law.

In response to questions, Miller indicated he was unaware if former Prime Minister Hasina had sought asylum in the United States. He stressed the importance of transparent investigations into the violence and deaths that have occurred over the past weeks.

The US has expressed its commitment to the relationship with the people of Bangladesh, urging all parties to refrain from further violence and to maintain calm and restraint in the days ahead. “We welcome the announcement of an interim government and urge any transition be conducted in accordance with Bangladesh’s laws,” Miller said. He expressed deep condolences for the human rights abuses, casualties, and injuries reported over the recent weeks.

A White House National Security Council spokesperson also commented on the situation, emphasizing the need for a democratic and inclusive interim government. “The United States has long called for respecting democratic rights in Bangladesh, and we urge that the interim government formation be democratic and inclusive,” the spokesperson said. The NSC spokesperson also commended the Bangladeshi Army for their restraint and encouraged all parties to restore peace quickly.

The spokesperson highlighted the necessity for the new government to investigate all attacks credibly and provide justice for the victims. “We express our deep concern and sadness about the reports of casualties and injuries, and we share our deepest condolences with those who lost loved ones and those who are suffering,” the spokesperson added.

As Bangladesh navigates this tumultuous period, the international community, led by the United States, calls for a peaceful, democratic resolution to the crisis, ensuring stability and justice for its people.
