After gangster turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were gunned down in full media glare in Prayagraj on Saturday night, the father of one of the attackers said on Sunday that his son was jobless and addicted to drugs.
Yagya Tiwari (father of Lovelesh, one of the arrested gunmen) told reporters on Sunday, “He is my son. We saw the incident on TV. We are not aware of Lovelesh’s actions nor have anything to do with it. He never lived here and never interfered in our family affairs. He didn’t tell us anything. He came here five to six days ago. We haven’t spoken to him in years. A criminal complaint has already been filed against him. In that case he was imprisoned. He doesn’t work. He was a drug addict. We have four children. We have nothing to say about it”.
Meanwhile, Pintu Singh (brother of shooter Sunny Singh) told “He was wandering around and not doing any work. We live apart and we don’t know how he became a criminal. We have no idea about the incident.”

Days after Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad was killed in an encounter in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi, the mafia politician and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were killed on Saturday while being taken for a medical check-up in Prayagraj.
Atiq was accused of murdering BSP MLA Raju Pal in 2005 and also the subsequent killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness to the BSP leader’s murder, in February this year. All three attackers were arrested, police said, after Atiq and his brother were shot dead.
“Three people have been arrested and are being questioned. A journalist was also injured when he fell and a constable sustained a bullet injury,” Prayagraj Police Commissioner Ramit Sharma said earlier.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath also ordered a three-member judicial commission to probe the incident.
“UP CM Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the Prayagraj incident. He chaired a high-level meeting and ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter. The CM has also ordered the formation of a three-member judicial commission (Judicial Inquiry Commission) in the matter,” the officer said.

Moments before the killing, the siblings of the gangsters who were accused in the Umesh Pal murder case spoke to the media when they were taken for a medical examination and their murder was caught on camera.
“Nahi le gaye to nahi gaye (They didn’t take us so we didn’t go),” were Atiq Ahmed’s last words when asked what he had to say about not being taken to his son Asad’s funeral.
