Guwahati: More than 30 people have died and more than 1.61 million people have been affected in 15 districts due to severe floods in Assam. A landslide in Badarpur area of Karimganj district killed five people, including a woman and her three daughters, as well as a three-year-old boy.
The landslide happened in Gaynachora village on Tuesday night. The landslide death toll in Assam has risen to over 30 since Cyclone Remal hit the state in May.
Karimganj Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das says “At 12.45 last night, information was received about a landslide in Gainachora village (Bendargool) under Badarpur police station. After receiving the information, the officer-in-charge of Badarpur police station along with his staff and SDRF personnel rushed to the spot and conducted a rescue operation for three hours later, the rescue team recovered five bodies from the debris”.
The dead include Roymun Nessa (55) and her daughters Sahida Khanam (18), Jahida Khanam (16) and Hamida Khanam (11). The three-year-old boy was identified as Mehdi Hasan, son of Mahimuddin.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Karimganj was the worst-hit district, with 1,52,133 people affected by the floods. The disaster affected 1,378.64 hectares of arable land and 54,877 animals. Currently, 470 villages in 24 revenue regions are under water.
Relief work is underway, 5114 people have found shelter in 4311 camps. However, the extent of damage to infrastructure such as the coast, roads and bridges has made the challenge of providing relief and assistance even more difficult. The Kopili River in Kampur is reported to be flowing above the danger level, raising fears of further flooding.
The flood-affected districts include Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang and Kokrajhar.
