New Delhi, June 18, 2024 — Severe heatwave conditions and intense rainfall are marking extreme weather patterns across India, as reported by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The country is experiencing record-breaking temperatures in several northern states while parts of the northeast and south are battling heavy monsoon rains.
Heatwave Conditions
A severe heatwave has gripped the northern plains, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels:
•Temperature Peaks: Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh have been particularly affected, with maximum temperatures ranging from 44-46°C, significantly above normal by 5-8°C.
•Warm Nights: The heatwave has been accompanied by warm night conditions, making little respite for residents even after sunset. Severe warm night conditions were reported in Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh.
•Hottest Spot: Prayagraj in East Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest temperature of 47.6°C, marking a new record.
Heavy Rainfall and Monsoon Advance
While the north swelters, other parts of the country are seeing intense rainfall due to advancing monsoon systems:
•Northeast India: Exceptionally heavy rainfall was recorded in Meghalaya, with widespread moderate to heavy rain across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu. Isolated regions in Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura also experienced significant downpours.
•Monsoon Progress: The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) continues to advance, now covering parts of Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and other regions. Conditions are favorable for further monsoon advancement in the next 3-4 days.
Weather Systems and Forecast
Several weather systems are currently influencing the diverse weather conditions:
•Cyclonic Circulations: Active cyclonic circulations over northeast Assam and the Northeast Arabian Sea are contributing to the widespread rainfall.
Rainfall Predictions:
•Northeast India: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal in the coming days.
•South India: Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, and South Interior Karnataka will see heavy to very heavy rainfall, with potential flooding in some areas.
•Central India: Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Konkan & Goa will experience scattered rainfall with isolated heavy showers.
Residents in heatwave-affected areas are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and utilize cooling measures. In regions expecting heavy rainfall, citizens are urged to prepare for potential flooding and exercise caution during thunderstorms.
