We continue to…’: US Responds After India Summons Diplomat Over Remarks on Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest

Following India’s summoning of a senior US diplomat over comments on the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller reiterated Washington’s stance on encouraging fair, transparent, and timely legal processes.

“We continue to follow these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal,” stated Matthew Miller during a state department briefing, responding to India’s summoning of acting deputy chief of mission Gloria Berbena in New Delhi earlier in the day.

Moreover, Miller addressed India’s concerns regarding the freezing of bank accounts belonging to the Congress party, emphasizing the importance of fair, transparent, and timely legal processes in resolving such matters.

However, Miller declined to comment on any private diplomatic conversations, reaffirming the US’s public stance on encouraging fair legal procedures.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had summoned Gloria Berbena to lodge a strong protest against remarks made by a US state department official regarding Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money-laundering case linked to a now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.

The MEA emphasized the importance of diplomatic respect for sovereignty and internal affairs, particularly among fellow democracies, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to an independent judiciary for objective and timely legal outcomes.
