Korean IT firms are racing to survive in hyperscale artificial intelligence to revolutionize smartphones

LG, KT, Naver, Kakao and other Korean tech companies have unveiled or are about to unveil their own hyperscale Artificial intelligence platforms in an effort to survive in an AI era that will revolutionize the industry as much as the Internet and smartphones to industry officials and experts on Wednesday.

Hyperscale AI, best known for ChatGPT from American AI company OpenAI, refers to AI that thinks, learns and makes judgments by learning itself from large amounts of data.

Companies are trying to survive on their own without relying on the platforms of global Big Tech companies. Their survival depends on seizing new opportunities, experts said, adding that the companies’ own platforms will allow them to focus on new business opportunities based on Korean and other languages.

These firms are looking to develop large language model (LLM) artificial intelligence predictive service platforms to bring new business opportunities in business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) fields such as finance, law, healthcare , education, administration and production, they added.

“It seems that many domestic IT companies have decided that they should not miss the opportunity in the artificial intelligence market, which is called the ‘ChatGPT moment’ after the ‘iPhone moment’,” says Kim Keun-kyo, Head of Brand & Communication at The local AI company, Upstage, said. “Not only domestic companies, but also Apple is said to have rushed into the development of LLM service. Many companies have decided that if they lose the leadership position in the AI business now, they will face difficulties in the future.”

Kim Kyung-joong, a professor at Sejong University’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering, said it is easier for domestic companies to develop their own platforms without relying on the services of overseas businesses and to explore new opportunities in markets abroad. as well as Korean consumers and B2B customers.

“Companies can run a variety of services for consumers and business customers with their own AI platform and can more easily protect sensitive internal information,” the professor said. “In addition, Korean companies are better able to provide services in Korean, but these companies can also launch AI services based on other foreign languages. By developing these platforms, they are not only targeting the Korean market, but are actively aiming overseas.”

The applications of business artificial intelligence are endless

Kim added that the development of platforms is a crucial way for companies to survive in the competition, as the applications of business AI are endless.

“Domestic companies are developing their own LLM instead of relying on overseas services to survive. Once such a platform is well developed, its uses will be endless. For B2C, companies will be able to provide more advanced platform application services to the businesses they currently serve. For B2B, they can create an additional business opportunity by providing a platform for security-conscious companies or offering customized services for specific companies,” he said.

Among the big players here, LG unveiled its latest hyperscale AI platform EXAONE 2.0 on July 19, faster than its local competitors.

Compared to the original version released in 2021, version 2.0 achieved a 25 percent reduction in processing time and a 70 percent reduction in memory usage, according to LG AI Research, the AI arm of LG Group, which developed the platform. EXAONE 2.0 learned about 45 million specialized documents, including patents and articles, and 350 million images. He can understand and answer questions in both Korean and English.

LG applies EXAONE to its branches. The beauty and health care division, LG Household & Health Care, used EXAONE to design packages for the beauty brand’s products.
