Lucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, in a major development, ahead of the Assembly polls, Congress has given a walkover to Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and his uncle Shivpal Yadav, by withdrawing its candidates from Karhal and Jaswantnagar.
Congress candidates did not file for nominations even when Tuesday was the last date. According to Manish Shah, AICC Coordinator of Mainpuri, this is a goodwill gesture towards the Samajwadi Party as they did not field any candidate against Sonia Gandhi in the last Lok Sabha polls.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav will be contesting the Karhal seat against Union Minister SP Singh Baghel.
Karhal assembly constituency seat is a part of the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency and is a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party since 1993. But in the 2002 election, the seat was won by sitting MLA Sobaran Singh on a BJP ticket. Later on, Sobaran Singh quit Bharatiya Janata Party to join Samajwadi Party. Thereafter, from 2007 onwards, he has won the seat three times consecutively, on the Samajwadi Party ticket.
Presently, Akhilesh Yadav is an MP from Azamgarh Lok Sabha Constituency. Karhal constituency is four kilometers from Saifai – the native village of Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The Karhal Assembly Constituency will go to the polls in the third phase of the total seven phases scheduled for the state. The third phase poll will be held on 20th February.
Polling for the 403 Assembly Constituency seats in Uttar Pradesh has been divided into seven phases, which will begin from February 10. The first phase poll is scheduled to be held on February 10, for 58 assembly seats. The second phase poll will be held on February 14, for 55 assembly seats.
The third phase poll is scheduled for February 20, for 59 assembly seats. The fourth phase poll is scheduled to be held on February 23, for 59 assembly seats. The fifth phase poll will be held on February 27, for 61 assembly seats. The sixth phase poll is scheduled for March 3, for 57 assembly seats and the seventh phase poll is scheduled on March 7, for 54 assembly seats.
