Dramatic events transpired in Lucknow as former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Samajwadi Party leader, Akhilesh Yadav, was denied entry to the Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC) while attempting to pay his respects to the renowned freedom fighter Jayaprakash Narayan on the occasion of his birth anniversary. Officials cited security concerns as the rationale behind denying him access to the building.
In response to the denial, Akhilesh Yadav and several Samajwadi Party leaders took matters into their own hands, seen climbing over the boundary wall of the Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre. This unauthorized entry led to a chaotic situation, with the police using mild force to disperse the crowd.
Akhilesh Yadav expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, highlighting that the denial of permission to lay a wreath on Jayaprakash Narayan’s birth anniversary was an act of fear on the part of the ruling BJP. He drew parallels between the current state of affairs and the movement initiated by Jayaprakash Narayan against corruption, unemployment, and inflation.
Yadav questioned whether the BJP’s stance implied that a ‘complete revolution’ was necessary even for paying respects. The Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre, inaugurated by Akhilesh Yadav during his tenure as Chief Minister in 2016, has been the subject of political controversy, with allegations of irregularities in its construction and funding allocation, as per a recommendation to initiate a “special audit” following the BJP’s assumption of power.
