Joe Biden and Trump Secure Nominations for Presidential Race, Setting Stage for Rematch

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump have clinched nominations as presidential candidates for the upcoming elections, paving the way for a rematch between the rivals after four years. Both candidates, having already defeated their primary challengers, obtained enough delegates in the states of Mississippi, Washington, and Georgia to surpass the threshold required to become their parties’ nominees in the November election.

The process to select a presidential nominee involves an indirect election or primary, where voters determine the number of delegates each party convention receives. These delegates then play a crucial role in selecting the party’s presidential nominee. In primaries, candidates need a majority of delegate votes at the convention to secure the party’s presidential nomination.

“Voters now have a choice to make about the future of this country. Are we going to stand up and defend our democracy or let others tear it down? Will we restore the right to choose and protect our freedoms or let extremists take them away?” remarked Mr. Biden, following his victory.

However, both candidates face significant challenges in their bids for the presidency. President Trump, at 77, faces legal proceedings as the first former US president to stand trial in a criminal case, accused of concealing hush money payments to a porn star. With 91 felony counts across four indictments, including allegations of attempting to overturn the 2020 election, Trump is also the only American president to be impeached twice.

Meanwhile, concerns about President Biden’s age, at 81, have hindered his return to the White House. Additionally, ongoing issues such as the crisis at the US-Mexico border, where a surge of migrants has overwhelmed the system, and recent incidents like the murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley allegedly by an illegal immigrant, have become contentious points between the two parties.

Amidst fiery rhetoric and accusations, President Biden has vowed not to yield to his Republican rival’s threats to democracy. In a firm stance, he pledged to reinstate Roe vs. Wade to counter the Republican agenda’s push to restrict abortion rights, following a spirited State of the Union address.
