Mamata Banerjee Warns of Cooking Gas Price Hike Under BJP Rule

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress President Mamata Banerjee has issued a stern warning, cautioning the public about the potential consequences of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Addressing a gathering in Bengal’s Jhargram district, Banerjee expressed concerns over the possible surge in cooking gas prices if the BJP returns to power at the Centre.

Banerjee, a vocal critic of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, painted a grim picture of potential price hikes, suggesting that cooking gas cylinders could soar to a staggering ₹2,000 each under BJP rule. She evoked imagery of hardship, suggesting that such exorbitant prices would force people back to traditional methods like collecting wood for fire.

Furthermore, Banerjee emphasized the urgency of housing projects under the Awas Yojana, stating that if the Central government fails to complete them by April-end, the West Bengal government will take charge and commence construction.

Highlighting grievances against the BJP-led Central government, Banerjee criticized its handling of schemes like the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), alleging delays in payments to beneficiaries. She cited an example of a youth who reportedly received dues only after a prolonged wait, underscoring the state government’s efforts in disbursing pending payments to 59 lakh individuals.

Meanwhile, the political landscape in West Bengal is heating up, with the BJP and Trinamool Congress engaged in a fierce battle over the arrest of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh in connection with the Sandeshkhali sexual assault case. While the Trinamool Congress has suspended Sheikh for six years, the arrest has sparked a war of words between the two parties, with the state’s Governor, CV Ananda Bose, weighing in on the matter.

As tensions escalate, the political arena in West Bengal remains charged, with both sides trading accusations and engaging in strategic maneuvers ahead of the impending elections.
