Intense Rain and Thunderstorms Hit Tamil Nadu, Chennai Declares Holiday in Schools

Chennai and several other districts in Tamil Nadu are experiencing intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning, according to the morning weather forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). As a precautionary measure, schools in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram districts have declared a holiday for the day, and both schools and colleges in Thiruvallur have been closed.

Heavy rain lashed low-lying regions in Chennai and other Tamil Nadu districts on Wednesday, causing flooding in many areas. Social media visuals depicted flooded streets in Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Thiruvallur, with water levels reaching almost knee-deep. The consistent rainfall led to significant traffic jams in Chennai.

The Chennai Corporation has established helpline numbers to assist residents affected by the rain. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Chennai and neighboring districts on December 2 and December 3, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The latest bulletin from the IMD reports a well-marked low-pressure area persisting over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea.

It is expected to move west-northwestwards, possibly turning into a depression over the Bay of Bengal today and intensifying into a cyclonic storm on December 2. In anticipation of the cyclone warning, five National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in Chennai, Chengalpet, and Villupuram districts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, in response to the heavy rain, has directed officials, ministers, MLAs, and local body representatives to provide all necessary assistance to people in the rain-affected regions.

The IMD has also forecast rain, thunderstorm activity, and cyclone warnings for other southern states and union territories, including Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, and Karaikal, until December 4.
