U.S. Aircraft Carrier Carl Vinson Arrives in South Korea Amid North Korean Missile Threat

The U.S. aircraft carrier Carl Vinson has docked at a port in the South Korean city of Busan as a demonstration of extended deterrence against North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. The arrival coincides with North Korea’s plans to launch a rocket carrying a space satellite between November 22 and December 1 in the direction of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, according to Japan’s Coast Guard.
This would be North Korea’s third attempt this year to launch a spy satellite into orbit. The presence of the Carl Vinson is seen as a demonstration of a strong combined defense posture and a determined willingness to respond to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats by the South Korea-U.S. alliance, according to South Korean Rear Admiral Kim Ji-hoon.
