India Inaugurates Centre for Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuit and Systems (CPPICS)

In a significant leap towards technological advancement, the Centre for Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuit and Systems (CPPICS) was inaugurated by Shri S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in Chennai. This remarkable event, held at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), reaffirms India’s commitment to fostering innovation and propelling the nation to the forefront of photonics and digital technology.

Key Highlights of the Inauguration:

•The inauguration of CPPICS signifies India’s commitment to advancing technology and innovation, aligning with its goals for a digitally empowered society and knowledge-based economy.

•Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) promise faster and more energy-efficient data processing and digital computing devices. They are poised to revolutionize various sectors, including data and telecommunications, healthcare, automotive, and quantum technologies.

• Under the visionary guidance of MeitY, India is actively fostering diverse PIC technology platforms, including silicon photonics, diamond photonics, polymer photonics, and lithium niobate photonics. This initiative aligns with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” mission of self-sustainable research and development.

•One remarkable achievement is the establishment of the Silicon Photonics Centre of Excellence on Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuit and Systems (Silicon Photonics CoE-CPPICS) at IIT Madras. This center focuses on the design, manufacture, and application development of Photonic Processor Chips using Silicon Photonics technology.

Future Ecosystem and Commercialization of Centre for Programmable Photonic Integrated Circuit and Systems

CPPICS aims to achieve self-sufficiency within the next five years and drive product commercialization through startups. It will also provide essential training to bolster the future ecosystem of PIC manufacturing in India.

CPPICS has forged partnerships, including collaboration with M/s Si2 Microsystems in Bangalore, to deliver state-of-the-art System-in-Package solutions for silicon photonic processor cores. This transformative technology is primed to serve various sectors, including quantum computing, quantum communication, 5G/6G communications, IoT, radar and avionics, and more.

The inauguration of CPPICS is a testament to India’s dedication to technological growth and innovation, setting the stage for future advancements in photonics and digital technology. The nation eagerly awaits the success of CPPICS as it takes this technology to full commercialization and spearheads PIC manufacturing in India.
