Cyclone Tej: Cyclonic storm ‘Tej’ can cause devastation, Storm brewing over the Arabian Sea, may turn into cyclone: IMD issued predictions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about the potential development of a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea in the next 48 hours, stemming from a possible cyclonic system that has formed in the southeast Arabian Sea and the adjacent Lakshadweep region. If this system intensifies, it could mark the first post-monsoon cyclone in the Arabian Sea.
Currently, there is a cyclonic circulation over the Lakshadweep area and the adjacent southeast Arabian Sea and Kerala coast, moving in a west-northwest direction. Under the influence of this circulation, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast and east-central Arabian Sea within the next 48 hours, as reported by the IMD.
Officials anticipate that this weather system will continue to move west-northwest and may intensify into a depression in the central Arabian Sea around October 21. The potential intensity of the cyclone has not been determined at this stage, and the IMD is closely monitoring the situation.
The period between October and December is considered favorable for the development of cyclonic circulations in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea due to warmer ocean temperatures. Notably, there were no tropical storms in the Arabian Sea during the post-monsoon season in 2022, while the Bay of Bengal experienced two tropical storms, Sitrang and Mandous.
In the event that the tropical storms forming in the Indian Seas develop into cyclones, they will be named ‘Tej,’ following the naming convention used for cyclones in the Indian Ocean region.
