5.4 magnitude earthquake hits Tokyo, four people injured

An earthquake struck Japan’s capital Tokyo and surrounding areas on Thursday, injuring several people and causing minor damage, officials and media said. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, and was centered in Chiba Prefecture, southeast of Tokyo. No tsunami warning was issued.

Four people were injured, including a man who was hit by a falling ceiling light, according to Japan’s Kyodo news agency, and some rail services were canceled or delayed.

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries and the 2011 massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed thousands and caused the catastrophic meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
